The
Bitterroot Valley Ragtime Society
(BVRS)
was established in August of 2005 by Gina Tiernan after
she moved to the beautiful
Bitterroot Valley from Northern
California. Tiernan, formerly on the board of directors
for West
Coast Ragtime Society decided to form a group similar
to the ragtime societies she'd been involved with in
California. After living in Corvallis, Montana for a
few months, Gina published an advertisement in the local
newspaper seeking interest in ragtime or vintage American
music in the Bitterroot Valley. Shortly thereafter several
people called inquiring about this new group, and the
first official meeting of the BVRS was held at Gina's
home in Corvallis in August 2005.
Therefore our Mission Statement
is: The Bitterroot Valley Ragtime Society was created for the
preservation, promotion and historical education of
vintage American music in the Ragtime and early jazz
genres.

Since that time, the BVRS
has been incrementally growing and has recently changed
venue from Gina's home in Corvallis to the Hamilton
Public House, in Victor Montana. The group
currently meets on the first Saturday of each month
at 4 p.m. at the Hamilton Pub in
Victor.

The BVRS meetings are open to the public and
although there is no charge for membership, we
welcome donations to help support our group's
newsletter which is mailed to those who do not
have access to a computer,
the event calendar
updates and the routine maintenance of our web
site. The BVRS invites anyone having an interest
in vintage American music in the genre of ragtime,
early jazz, blues, boogie-woogie and stride to
come to our monthly meetings. We welcome "player
participation" if folks wish to play. The Hamilton
Pub has a lovely old piano available, and we've
had several impromptu banjo, guitar and cornet
players as well as drummers sitting in on the
sessions at any given time. We invite people to
play, dance and sing or... just listen and enjoy
the great sounds of this fun old time music.
